Congenital or acquired deficiency of Protein C plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Purpura fulminans. Decreased abundance of this endogenous anticoagulant leads to sudden disseminated clotting in the microcirculation, resulting in cutaneous lesions and progressing organ failure.
Protein C supplementation and restoration of the balance in coagulation pathways is a reliable option in the therapy of Purpura fulminans.
